Grundlagen und Praxis ist ein Volltreffer. Walter Striebel legt hiermit ein ausgereiftes Werk vor, das mit detaillierter Darstellung sämtlicher Aspekte der Anästhesie glänzt und mit etlichen wertvollen Praxistipps aufwartet.

Dass der Autor Chef des Instituts für Anästhesiologie und Intensivmedizin der Städtischen Kliniken Frankfurt-Höchst und nicht dem Uniklinikbetrieb verpflichtet ist, schlägt sich in einer wohltuend einfachen, gehaltvollen und streckenweise durchaus unterhaltsamen Schreibweise nieder. Das Buch erinnert mit seinen vielen Illustrationen, Schemata und Diagrammen unwillkürlich an Larsens Anästhesie. Leider beweist Striebel bei der Auswahl der Abbildungen keine glückliche Hand: Was nützen z. B. spaltengroße Fotos von Trapanal(R)- oder Ketanest(R)-Packungen im Abschnitt zur Medikation? Doch das ist nicht tragisch, schließlich dürfte die Mehrzahl der Leser das Werk zum Nachschlagen oder zum Lernen während der Facharztausbildung nutzen.

Die Anästhesie ist auf dem neuesten Stand, was sich etwa in den aktuellen Empfehlungen zur Prävention von Maligne-Hyperthermie-Zwischenfällen, den Bemerkungen zur Marktrücknahme des Droperidols oder in der kurzen Information über das Problem der intraoperativen Wachheit zeigt. Die wichtigen Kapitel zur Narkose bei Begleiterkrankungen -- und darin besteht die tägliche Herausforderung für den Anästhesisten -- sind ausführlich und bis ins kleinste Detail hilfreich. Das gilt nicht nur für die Abhandlung der häufigen kardiopulmonalen Risiken, auch die Anweisungen etwa für die Narkoseführung bei MAO-Hemmer-Therapie oder Drogensucht sind eindeutig und frei von Vorurteilen.

Die Anästhesie. Grundlagen und Praxis ist ein Buch aus einem Guss. Hier wurden nicht Beiträge diverser Autoren zusammengewürfelt, hier schreibt ein Praktiker für seine künftigen Teamkollegen. Für alle, die bisher eher mit dem Larsen liebäugelten oder sich für kein Anästhesiebuch entscheiden konnten, ist Striebels Werk eine lohnende Alternative.

These lectures on logic, more specifically proof theory, are basically intended for postgraduate students and researchers in logic.

The question at stake is the nature of mathematical knowledge and the difference between a question and an answer, i.e., the implicit and the explicit. The problem is delicate mathematically and philosophically as well: the relation between a question and its answer is a sort of equality where one side is “more equal than the other”: one thus discovers essentialist blind spots.

Starting with Gödel’s paradox (1931) – so to speak, the incompleteness of answers with respect to questions – the book proceeds with paradigms inherited from Gentzen’s cut-elimination (1935). Various settings are studied: sequent calculus, natural deduction, lambda calculi, category-theoretic composition, up to geometry of interaction (GoI), all devoted to explicitation, which eventually amounts to inverting an operator in a von Neumann algebra.

Mathematical language is usually described as referring to a preexisting reality. Logical operations can be given an alternative procedural meaning: typically, the operators involved in GoI are invertible, not because they are constructed according to the book, but because logical rules are those ensuring invertibility. Similarly, the durability of truth should not be taken for granted: one should distinguish between imperfect (perennial) and perfect modes. The procedural explanation of the infinite thus identifies it with the unfinished, i.e., the perennial. But is perenniality perennial? This questioning yields a possible logical explanation for algorithmic complexity.

This highly original course on logic by one of the world’s leading proof theorists challenges mathematicians, computer scientists, physicists and philosophers to rethink their views and concepts on the nature of mathematical knowledge in an exceptionally profound way.

Digital sound synthesis has long been approached using standard digital filtering techniques. Newer synthesis strategies, however, make use of physical descriptions of musical instruments, and allow for much more realistic and complex sound production and thereby synthesis becomes a problem of simulation.

It covers time series and difference operators, and basic tools for the construction and analysis of finite difference schemes, including frequency-domain and energy-based methods, with special attention paid to problems inherent to sound synthesis. Various basic lumped systems and excitation mechanisms are covered, followed by a look at the 1D wave equation, linear bar and string vibration, acoustic tube modelling, and linear membrane and plate vibration. Various advanced topics, such as the nonlinear vibration of strings and plates, are given an elaborate treatment.

The face of the Moon we see today has been substantially etched by the effects of meteor impacts. Craters on the Moon are the result of ancient impacts with large meteorites - or small asteroid-like bodies - which produced both primary craters (where the meteorites hit) and secondary craters (where material hurled high above the surface crashed back down). Many plants produce enzymes collectively known as ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs). RIPs catalyze the removal of an adenine residue from a conserved loop in the large ribosomal RNA. The adenine residue removed by this depurination is crucial for the binding of elongation factors. Ribosomes modified in this way are no longer able to carry out protein synthesis. Most RIPs exist as single polypeptides (Type 1 RIPs) which are largely non-toxic to mammalian cells because they are unable to enter them and thus cannot reach their ribosomal substrate. In some instances, however, the RIP forms part of a heterodimer where its partner polypeptide is a lectin (Type 2 RIPs). These heterodimeric RIPs are able to bind to and enter mammalian cells. Their ability to reach and modify ribosomes in target cells means these proteins are some of the most potently cytotoxic poisons found in nature, and are widely assumed to play a protective role as part of the host plant’s defenses. This book provides a challenging and stimulating introduction to the contemporary topics of complexity and criticality, and explores their common basis. Criticality refers to the behaviour of extended systems at a phase transition where scale invariance prevails; the many constituent microscopic parts bringing about macroscopic phenomena that cannot be understood by considering a single part alone. The phenomenology of phase transitions is introduced by considering percolation, a simple model with a purely geometrical percolating phase transition, thus enabling the reader to become intuitively familiar with concepts such as scale invariance and renormalisation. The Ising model, meanwhile, is a simple model capturing the phase transition from a disordered to an ordered system as the temperature is lowered in zero external field. By emphasising analogies between percolation and the Ising model, the reader's intuition of phase transitions is developed so that the underlying theoretical formalism may be appreciated fully. These equilibrium systems undergo a phase transition only if an external agent finely tunes certain external parameters to particular values. Besides fractals and phase transitions, there are many examples in Nature of the emergence of such complex behaviour in slowly driven non-equilibrium systems: earthquakes in seismic systems, avalanches in granular media and rainfall in the atmosphere. A class of non-equilibrium systems, with no constraints in having to tune external parameters to obtain critical behaviour, is addressed in the framework of simple models, revealing that repeated application of simple rules might spontaneously give rise to emergent complex behaviour not encoded in the rules themselves. The common basis of complexity and criticality is identified and applied to a range of non-equilibrium systems. Finally, the reader is invited to speculate whether self-organisation in non-equilibrium systems might be a unifying concept for disparate fields such as statistical mechanics, geophysics and atmospheric physics.

Also the physics of semiconductor Lasers is described in detail including Einstein coefficients, stimulated emission, spontaneous emission, laser gain, double heterostructures, blue Lasers, optical confinement, laser modes, strained quantum wells lasers which will give insight into the physics of various kinds of semiconductor lasers, in addition to the various processes of luminescence.

But it is elegant, in part because of the 1920 translation, by Robert W. Lawson, a British physicist who had polished his German while a prisoner of war in Austria. The introduction, by science writer Nigel Calder, guides the reader through the work section by section, even giving advice on which sections to skip, or at least not to worry about, if you can't "accompany Einstein through the forest of tricky ideas contained in this slim volume." Okay, this book isn't easy--again, in the master's elegant words, it "lays no small claims on the patience and on the power of abstraction of the reader"--but it is well worth the try.
